FIGURE DRAWING

Figure Drawing
"This site contains demonstrations and imagery from class lectures and my recently published book Figure Drawing: Design and Invention. In many ways, I consider this site to be an extension and supplement to the book, in that I am able to constantly keep updating the blog section with new drawings, pages, examples, etc. I will also use this site to update ongoing lectures/workshops or other engagements."

FREER AND SACKLER
Freer and Sackler Gallery
"The Smithsonian Institution has two museums of Asian art: the Freer Gallery of Art which opened to the public in 1923, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which welcomed its first visitors in 1987. Both are physically connected by an underground passageway, and ideologically linked through the study, exhibition, and sheer love of Asian art. In addition, the Freer Gallery contains an important collection of 19th century American art punctuated by James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room, perhaps one of the earliest (and certainly one of the most controversial) art installations on record."

TAKASHI MURAKAMI
Takashi Murakami
"Takashi Murakami is a prolific contemporary Japanese artist who works in both fine arts media—such as painting—as well as digital and commercial media. He blurs the boundaries between high and low art. He appropriates popular themes from mass media and pop culture, then turns them into thirty-foot sculptures, "Superflat" paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines or phone caddies."

ANDREW HEM

"Andrew Hem's introspective, otherworldly paintings explore realities one step away from our everyday waking life. What if our thoughts flickered across the surface of our skin like ephemeral silent movies? What if spirits walked among us, trying to find their path? What if there were no racism, and even the most outlandish people were accepted? What if the children of Andrew's native land had been allowed to live in peace and thrive?"

JENNYBIRD ALCANTARA
Jennybird Alcantara
"Jennybird Alcantara is an artist living in San Francisco CA. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.. The majority of her work is oil paintings on wood but she also creates art dolls inspired by her paintings and acrylic works on paper. Her work has at its core a dreamlike narrative and through her paintings she contemplates the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. Jennybird uses the symbolism of duality to explore the connection of life and death and the veil in between, as well as the relationship between the beauty and cruelness of nature, that of the natural world as well as human and animal nature. The anthropomorphic qualities in her characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits."

AMANDA VISELL
Amanda Visell
"Amanda Visell's fine art career sprouted from continuing failure. A high school drop out and Cal Arts reject, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in traditional animation eventually finding her way to stop motion animation as a designer and sculptor, working on stylized projects for shows like The Simpsons and the feature film Elf. The challenge of mastering new tools and techniques in this medium taught her to be able to visualize her own style. She has been exhibiting her paintings and sculptures internationally since 2005 including Disneyland USA and has created a thriving world of characters as designer toys."

BRITTNEY LEE

Brittney Lee
"I like to start my day with a coffee and some scribble drawings to get creative juices flowing. It is a technique I learned from workshop with Nate Wragg back in 2007, and it really encourages experimentation with different shapes and compositions.
Staying physically active usually boosts my creative energy. I am a big fan of yoga, but I really love to try new things, too. A few days ago I took a trapeze lesson for the first time, and let me tell you, nothing gets your blood pumping like free-falling from 30 feet in the air!
Other than that, I try to surround myself with creative stimulus. I watch lots of films, listen to all kinds of music, see a lot of plays, and keep my work and living spaces filled with photographs, artwork, books, and other knick-knacks that inspire me. Having great friends to bounce ideas off of and to be inspired by always helps too!"

CLYDE ASPEVIG
"I chose to paint realistic landscapes because I was drawn to recreating nature in a way that appealed to my Clyde Aspevig Paintingown ideas, senses and intellect. I am firmly convinced that a literal naturalistic painting can still satisfy the passions of an intellectual mind. Inventing your own concept of realism is the first and most important step in achieving that goal."
